Loop Montfort l'Amaury - Ponds of Holland

The ponds of Holland - The Breviaries

This hike gives you the opportunity to combine Montfort L'Amaury, a charming village in Yvelines, and the ponds of Holland, a pond dug under the order of Louis XIV to supply the gardens of Versailles. A historic parenthesis during this hike.

Description of the hike

Start opposite the church of Montfort l'Amaury. Take the Rue de Sancé on the left which joins the GR1.
Follow the GR for about 2,5 km: after entering the forest, you walk along the Étang de la Plaine(1), then, after the Brûlins crossroads, a short descent towards the Porte Baudet or Maurus crossroads(2), before returning to the
Belsedene Road(3).

(4)At the Maurus crossroads, leave the GR and take the cycle path (paved) on the left which connects Montfort to Rambouillet. Follow it to the large Comte de Toulouse crossroads.

(5)Cross the crossroads and continue opposite on the Chêne Montavale road which you will follow as far as the Holland ponds, noticing the Table du Roi halfway.

(6)Cross the ponds, nice view, and continue straight (it's a bit bumpy: horse crossing, equestrian center on the left) until the 3rd path on the right (Route des Bergeries)(7) which you take for a short kilometer until you come back to the Montfort-Rambouillet cycle path.

(8)Turn right onto the cycle path and follow it.

(9)Cross the Route aux Vaches and stay on the cycle path until the
Grand Carrefour du Poteau de Hollande(10) We take on the left the road of the Two Castles which we follow until the end: it joins the D138 (11) which we will take to the right for about 50m and which we leave for the 1st forest road on the right (Le Parc d'en Haut).

We arrive at a forest house.(12) We leave the road for a small path that goes to the left opposite the gate. This is the Route de Montfort. Continue in this direction straight ahead, to the starting point of the hike.
