La Route of the 2nd DB takes the path followed by General Leclerc's 2nd Armored Division during the Liberation of France, since its landing in Normandy on August 1, 1944 at Saint-Martin-de-Varreville (Utah Beach), the Liberation of Paris on August 25, 1944 until the fighting in Alsace, including the capture of Strasbourg on November 23, 1944.
All along this route, and in each of the towns and villages of France liberated by this prestigious unit, 16000 men, 4000 vehicles, a Road Marker of the 2nd DB, Stele of the Oath of Koufra commemorates the fulfillment of the oath.
Applying to himself his order to “gallop at full speed towards Paris”, General Leclerc left Fleuré at dawn on August 23 with the officers of his reduced staff, protected by 5 armored cars and 2 scout cars. . He arrived around 13 p.m. in Rambouillet, to the cheers of the population and the attentive eye of a swarm of reporters, including Ernest Hemingway.
