Palace of the King of Rome, entrance from the garden
From 1873, President Mac-Mahon and his successors came to hunt in Rambouillet. In 1880, Jules Grévy was the first President of the Republic to be able to entertain himself at Rambouillet. But it was not until 1896 that Félix Faure decided to transform the castle into a presidential residence. Rambouillet then became a fashionable resort. The business and industrial bourgeoisie built beautiful villas there, opulent or picturesque, and supplied themselves with the Maison Nez – the current Paquet pastry shop – while President Lebrun married his son there. The construction of the new Hôtel des Postes confirms this status as a presidential residence.
